Angela Cheung (b1968 )
In 1968, when Angela Cheung was born in Grantham Hospital, her father, popular restauranteur and Grantham Hall of Famer, Peter Cheung, was so delighted he brought in Chinese food for the whole ward.
For many, it was the first time they had ever tried Chinese cuisine.
At Dudley House Primary School, Angela was so shy her teachers thought she could not understand English.
She channelled her energy into music, studying under Ms Hall and then Geoffrey Willett, winning trophies at the Grantham Music Festival and attending Grantham Music School on Saturday mornings, and Lincolnshire Youth Orchestra every month.
Her secondary schooling was at KGGS, becoming joint Head Girl and remembering the visit of then Prime Minister and former KGGS student, Margaret Thatcher in 1982.
After school, Angela went to study music at Leeds University with renowned teacher, Renee Waterman, before spending a year in Japan in the quaint port town of Onomichi, as part of the Japanese Government’s JET Program.
After back-packing overland with her sister, Elizabeth, from Japan back to Grantham, including a relaxing ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the less-relaxing first-hand experience of the famous 1991 “August Coup” in Moscow, Angela then flew off to Hong Kong on a one-way ticket with £300 in her pocket and hasn’t looked back.
Her TV career started at MTV Asia – scripting, writing and producing music, movies and pop culture shows all across Asia, before becoming part of the launch team who created a brand new music channel, Channel V.
At one point, she worked three jobs: Channel V producer by day, Radio DJ by night and a children’s TV presenter at the weekends.
After a stint in Malaysia, Angela returned to Hong Kong to become Head of Production for Fremantle Asia, a television content and distribution powerhouse whose hit shows at the time included Baywatch, Family Fortunes, The Price is Right and The Pyramid Game.
Angela even had the chance to return to her roots as Family Fortunes was filmed at Carlton Studios in Nottingham. From there, she became Regional Director of Production at Walt Disney Television Asia-Pacific for 9 years, during a period of rapid growth with the launch of 11 Disney Channels throughout Asia Pacific.
After 9 years at Walt Disney TV, Angela joined the launch team at Hong Kong Disneyland, setting up the Broadcast Marketing Department.
She’s worked with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnston, Sylvester Stallone, Britney Spears, Jacky Chan, Bruce Willis, Sir Patrick Stewart, Kylie Minogue, winning accolades along the way from the ABU/CASBAA Unicef Child’s Rights Award, to World Media Festival and Asian Television Awards.
Angela is now Managing Director at APV, an independent creative agency that helps multinational companies tell their brand stories through compelling content. A sought-after coach and speaker,
Angela has given workshops and speeches at HSBC, Prudential, Cathay Pacific, Google, UBS, Mediacorp, Disney, Fox Channels, The Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies Bhutan, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Northwestern University, NYU, University of Columbus and Georgetown University.
