Pete Hack (1949-2004)
PETER Edward Hack was a highly respected local footballer, but it was on the field of play that tragedy struck.
Born in Melton Mowbray, he attended Redmile Primary School, then Belvoir High School and for a short time went to St Hugh’s, in Grantham.
A keen footballer, he played for Woolsthorpe on Saturdays and Caythorpe FC on Sundays. He also played cricket for Denton as in the mid 1960’s and sport was his life.
He first worked for Stewart and Lloyds’ ironstone quarries at Harlaxton, then joined Read’s Canning factory. Springfield Road, where he worked for about 25 years until the ill-fated football accident while playing against Swinstead Reserves in October 1989.
His injuries left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Pete also belonged to the RAOB, something he enjoyed very much and took pride in.
He was also a member of church tree’s disabled club where he became chairman and again also enjoyed his time there.
He was a keen fan and season ticket holder of Nottingham Forest where he regularly attended home games with his two sons Robert and Aaron.
He certainly lived life to the full even though he spent 15years in his wheelchair cared for 24/7 by his devoted wife Hilary. Even when there youngest son Aaron was born in the December of 1989 she struggled through.
Pete was finally diagnosed with cancer and sadly died in November 25th 2004 – still remembered as a local legend.
