Teenage swimming star Freya Colbert is on her way to Russia this summer after being selected to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Championships.
Freya, from Grantham, is one of the youngest members of team GB for the five day event in Kazan in July. The 15-year-old was chosen after swimming a qualification time in the 400IM and impressing the selectors at April’s British Championships in Glasgow.
Although Freya now swims for Nova Centurion swimming club in Nottingham she still trains one day a week at her old club Grantham.
The KGGS pupil is delighted to be Russia-bound with 32 other young swimmers from around Britain, following a stellar performance at the British Champs.
She said: “I was really happy with my 400IM time – it was definitely my best event with a four second PB and the European Junior qualifying time. My coach Nathan Hilton told me at the beginning of the season I could go sub-4.50 and I didn’t really believe him but I guess it’s a reality now! Overall I was happy with my racing in Glasgow but I’m keen to keep improving and I’m looking forward to getting back into training now and preparing for the summer.”
And Freya wasn’t the only Grantham swimmer who qualified for the recent prestigious British Championships. Her former squad-mate and fellow KGGS pupil Abigail Farkas, from Ropsley, who swims for Grantham Swim Club, qualified to take part in the 200m butterfly. Abigail, aged 16, competed in the incredibly tough open age group and swam a time which should qualify her for the British Summer Championships at the end of July.
