For 8 days in May (4th to 10th) the sounds of top quality live jazz will be heard in Lincoln and around the County when the 2019 Lincolnshire Jazz Week hosts some of this country’s top jazz musicians giving jazz fans the chance to access great live music on our doorstep.
Swinging, accessible, exciting and creative jazz across the styles will all be heard when 74 professional musicians give 15 performances in 12 different venues, ranging from intimate cafes and dedicated venues to the splendour of Lincoln Cathedral, giving this year’s festival an exciting variety of musical styles and atmospheres.
The recent winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year, saxophonist Xhosa Cole, joins Lincoln’s very own Stevie Smith and his Trio to get the festival rolling when they appear at Lincoln LPAC’s Zing Bar on Friday 3rd May.
The return of the New YorkBrass Band, who were such a sensation in 2018 will bring their energetic dance music to Lincoln’s Blue Room on Saturday 4th May and you might even catch them playing in Castle Square performing their ‘party set’ late afternoon on the same day as a warm up to their show later that evening.
The Chris Ingham Quartet will not only be performing their highly regarded ‘Getz – A Musical Portrait’ in Grantham (Saturday 4th May) and Stamford Arts Centre (Sunday 5th May) but they also join the Lincoln Cathedral Choir and congregation in the Cathedral for a special Jazz Eucharist Morning Service (Sunday 5th May) performing ‘A little Jazz Mass’ plus some Gershwin tunes sung by the choir.
The Blue Room Lincoln hosts The Bryan Corbett Quartet on the evening of Sunday 5th May. Bryan, who is a brilliant and much acclaimed trumpeter who has performed around the world then joins The Rick Woolgar Trio at the Masons Arms Hotel, Louth on Monday 6th.
An incredible line-up of UK jazz stars which includes Geoff Gascoyne, Alan Barnes, Tom Cawley, Sebastiaan de Krom and Dennis Rollins MBE grace the Blue Room stage on Tuesday 7th May before they deliver the specially commissioned ‘Byrd meets Bird’ concert at the Lincoln Cathedral (Chapter House – Wednesday 8thMay) alongside the Cathedral Choir and Musical Director AricPrentice celebrating two musical geniuses, William Byrd and Charlie (Bird) Parker.
Thursday 9th May sees some fabulous vocalists heading to Lincolnshire when The South Holland Centre, Spalding presents ‘King for a Day’: The Nat King Cole Story featuring the impressive singer Atila.
Grantham will be hosting singer Tina MayandThe Andrew Wood Trio in the Grantham Guildhall Arts Centre stage whilst the Terry O’Toole Theatre, North Hykeham sees Jo Harrop lead her Quintet featuring saxophonist Tony Kofi playing ‘Fever’ a tribute to the great jazz singer Peggy Lee.
The Jazz Week ends on Friday 10th May with The Suzanne Mellard Quartet appearing in the popular Caffe Portico, Lincoln and Funky Organ playing into the night in Bar 67 at the Lincoln Hotel.
Zing Bar and Bar 67 events are free to enter and the others have very attractive ticket prices.
