Wednesday 6 March saw the bi-annual careers fair at Grantham College titled Where to? in partnership with LincHigher.
For the morning more than 40 employers and Universities were invited into our sports hall to help guide our students towards their future prospectus. In attendance, of course was Grantham College’s Apprenticeship and Higher Education team along with the University of Lincoln, University Arts London, Salted Orange Co., Woodhead Construction and Engineered in Grantham to name a few.
Students were also greeted with smoothie bikes where they could make their own smoothie to promote healthy eating throughout the college and of course for a little indulgence we had a candy floss machine and chocolate fountain.
Morning workshops were also organised for students to take part in, where they could get to grips on a range of different things including Interview Techniques run by the Rotary Club, Social Media and LinkedIn workshops run by Ben Brown from XMA, setting up a business run by Princes Trust, Volunteering run by CVS, Cover Letter writing run by internal staff member Carol Dyer and a Mental Health and Wellbeing workshop run by internal staff member Lorna Hollands.
The aim of the day was to show our students the different opportunities that are out there for them and also how they can take advantage of these opportunities and be prepared for their future.
“Employability is at the heart of everything we do, and essential to the student experience at Grantham College. The Careers Fair is a fantastic way for us to celebrate our commitment to our students’ future directions.” Mentioned Assistant Principal to Higher Education, Dr Steven Peacock.
“It was great to see so many local employers and educational institutions working together, including promoting our own HE courses and our University Centre. The event had a really vibrant atmosphere, and the students got a lot out of it.”
The day was also filmed by Lincolnshire local filming company Brightspark Studios to showcase the different activities and different employers that attended the event. With lunch also provided by Grantham company the Lunch Box Company – all the employers and workshop leaders were also treated to a day where they could network and get to meet our students.
Marketing Manager, Jaz Abeysekera who organised the day alongside Advice and Guidance Coordinator Amy Goswell and Marketing & Communications Assistant Hannah Ryan said of the day; “We wanted to widen students’ knowledge on future careers and opportunities, we achieved this by having over 40 employers exhibiting at our careers fair and we also held workshops by the likes of Princes Trust, XMA, the Rotary Club and CVS Volunteering.”
“Students and staff seemed to get a lot out of the day, taking a lot of new information away from it and hopefully lots of ideas about their future career paths too. We hope they’ve learnt about careers that hadn’t heard of or thought about and that the day broadened their horizons”
“We’d like to thanks all the employers that took time of out of their busy schedules to provide our students with valuable information and their knowledge of the different sectors.”
In the afternoon, students were invited to take part in career related study as well as attend workshops that focused on Apprenticeships and Higher Education apprenticeships. A huge thank you to all the employers and workshop leaders who attended our careers fair as well as a huge thank you to LincHigher for helping to make our careers fair what it was!
