Les Stancer (1925 – 2021)
GRANTHAM born Lesley Stancer played for Notts County during the Second World War, mainly friendlies, plus one FA Cup appearance in the Autumn of 1945.
Les was soon playing for Grantham and scored on his debut in January 1946 against Mansfield Town Reserves. He made seven appearances for the club that term, one of which was in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup Final against Boston United, and only five in the subsequent season.
The majority of his games came in the 1948/49 campaign, although after this his appearances came infrequently, with the end of his Grantham career in March 1953 when he covered for an unavailable Jack Macartney in the Midland League fixture at Nottingham Forest Reserves.
After football, Les became landlord of the Recruiting Sergeant, Great Gonerby, before spending nearly 20 years as the landlord of the Cherry Tree, Harrowby Lane.
