Ray Michelson (1934-2010)
GRANTHAM businessman Ray Michelson was a tireless charity campaigner for Help the Aged.
Born in Leicestershire, he was brought up in Ropsley.
After leaving school. he worked in a variety of roles for Chandler’s Oil and Gas, Co-op Insurance and builders merchants Jackson Shipley.
He later set up in business as a newspaper roundsman and went on to buy a newsagents on Springfield Road.
After selling the shop (which retained his name until closing in 2017) he continued the roundsman business and later bought the newsagents in Market Place, which he ran until his retirement.
He remained an influential character in the trade as chairman of the East Midlands branch of the National. Federation of Retail Newsagents.
After retiring, Ray became involved with the Help the Aged (later Age UK) charity as chairman of the Grantham fund-raising committee.
In 2007 he received a lifetime achievement award from the charity.
