William Weatherhogg (1895-1971)
WILLIAM Weatherhog was Grantham’s last Chief Constable, before the borough police was merged into the Lincolnshire Constabulary 1949, after which he retired.
He was born in the south of the county and was educated at Spalding Grammar School.
He enlisted with the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1915 and three years later took a commission in the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment. He joined the Royal Flying Corps and was wounded at the Battle of the Somme.
In 1919 he joined the Barnsley police and after two years became a sergeant. Un 1925 he was promoted to Inspector and second officer in Barnsley Fire Brigade.
He came to Grantham in 1937 as Chief Constable, succeeding J R Casburn.
Thoughout the Second World War he was Civil Defence controller for the town, with responsibility for fire and ambulance services as well as police.
On retirement he was secretary of the Grantham Almshouses Charities and a member of the Road Safety Committee.
A Freemason, he was Past Master of the William Peters Lodge, and St Wulfram’s Lodge and a member of the 18th degree of the Ancient and Acceptable Rite.
