3,000 athletes take part in event near Grantham

July 29, 2024 Leave a Comment

Over 3,000+ athletes and their supporters joined us at the beautiful Belvoir Castle for our first ever event in Leicestershire. What a weekend of triathlon, multisport, swimming and running at a wonderful new castle!

On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July, the beautiful and historical Belvoir Castle played host to it’s first ever Castle Race Series Triathlon and Multisport Festival

The sun shone as our competitors took to the brand new courses, which proved very popular with athletes across all distances. The events village was buzzing with spectators who had come to see athletes crossing the finish line in front of the stunning Belvoir Castle.

The castle really is a extraordinary place to race, made all the more special by loud and loyal supporters dotted around the courses cheering!

DAY ONE – 27 JULY

First up on our programme was th eSprint Plus and Sprint Triathlon races, followed by Duathlon, Aquabike and Aquathlon sprints. Congrats to winners of the Sprint Triathlon, Josh Lahiri and Emily Heslop! The sunny morning session was rounded off with Super Sprint, Starter Triathlons and the Swim Series.

Well done to winners of the 5k wetsuit swim Conner Hume and Alice Cundy.

In the afternoon, all eyes were on the youth events. We hosted the 11-12 year olds and 9-10 year olds, all of whom raced their hearts out.

Paralympian Lauren Steadman Racing at Belvoir

We were delighted to have elite Paralympian Lauren Steadman race with us on Saturday morning taking part in the Sprint Tri race as a warm up for the Paris Paralympics in September. She had a fantastic race and came in as the first female across the line. She was thrilled with how her race went saying she wanted a “hard hit out” before the paralympics and was delighted to have picked off most of the men as she powered through the course!

DAY TWO – 28 JULY

8am sharp on Sunday morning our Gauntlet participants took to the start line of our famous half iron distance, a 1.9k, 90k and 21.1k course. The first competitor back was Rory Strachan and first woman was Charlotte Brooks.

Huge congratulations to middle distance duathlon winners Ryan Gavin and Ali Vaz.

Standard distance triathlon, duathletes, aquathletes and aquabikers raced their hearts out! Well done to Andrei Clark and Kay Henderson who were first across the line out of the aquathlon and standard triathlon winner Gavin Negus and Sarah Sellens.

Run Series

The Run Series saw many join the marathon, half marathon and 10K races to test out our new run routes. It was certainly a toughy of a course! Many runners really enjoyed the challenge of an undulating course, one racer describing the route as “wonderful surroundings, great mix of terrain and easy to navigate. It was tough as heck in places, which was brilliant!”.

Very well done to marathon winners Lee Baynton and Kata Csiba who completed the course in time of 3:19 and 3:55 respectively.

Inspiring Athlete Stories

We had many amazing athletes join us over the weekend. Many returning to sport from injury or illness and we’re so proud of each of you for your fantastic achievements over the weekend. We loved watching Emilie Heald and her friends and family cross the finish line. In her 10th year being cancer free she is taking on 10 activities to support the charities that helped her!

We also loved watching Castle Race Series regular Bailey Matthews conquer yet another triathlon. Bailey has become like family to the Castle Race Series Team over the years and we could not have been prouder to see him cross the finish line surrounded by the team over the weekend.

A few words from Brian

Race Director Brian Adcock said “What an amazing venue! Our new jewel definitely sparkled this weekend. What a fantastic weekend of racing at one of the most stunning venues in Europe. We absolutely loved hosting you here and congratulations to all athletes that took part. We look forward to seeing you again next year – when we return on 19th – 20th July 2025”
