South Kesteven councillors will be asked to authorise £100,000 towards underwriting the unveiling of a statue of Margaret Thatcher on St Peter’s Hill.
The cabinet is being recommended to approve the cash, on Tuesday, towards a mega event which should attract worldwide attention.
Although the council is not funding the celebration, it is making sure the event takes place if the fundraising falls short.
The date is yet to be fixed, the plinth is already in place and the unveiling is expected sometime next year..
The £300,000 statue, which was rejected by Westminster council, was funded by The Public Memorials Appeal .
A report to go before councillors says: “The event will be used to promote ‘Inspirational Women of South Kesteven’ including Edith Smith who served in Grantham as the first female warranted police officer in the country and Harriet Arbuthnot, close friend and advisor of the Duke of Wellington when he was Prime Minister between 1828-1830.
“The statue is expected to attract many visitors to the area which will increase Grantham and South Kesteven’s status as a destination for tourism with the associated benefits that brings.”
Born on Grantham, the daughter of Ald Alfred Roberts, she was brought up at her father’s corner shop on North Parade. She attended Huntingtower and KGGS schools before going to Oxford Unviversity.
