InvestSK, South Kesteven District Council’s economic growth and regeneration company, has supported a group of engineering companies to create a new brochure designed to promote careers in engineering and attract more young people into the field.
The Engineered in Grantham group is formed of local companies from Grantham and the surrounding area who have come together to help plug the skills gap in the engineering sector and tackle the challenges they face when recruiting for local vacancies.
Instigated by Engineered in Grantham, InvestSK has worked with the group to produce a new brochure to underpin their activity to showcase the variety of engineering careers available to young people and help to inspire students to consider engineering as a career choice.
The brochure provides an overview of each of the Engineered in Grantham companies, alongside encouraging testimonials from employees who have started their careers in the field. Grantham College and the University of Lincoln are also featured, outlining the different ways to get into engineering.
The brochure was launched at Grantham College on Wednesday 6th March during their career event, ‘Where to?’, organised as part of National Apprenticeship Week which runs from 4th – 8th March. The event was attended by around 600 students with members of the Engineered in Grantham group exhibiting to inspire and encourage more local talent to consider a career in engineering.
Councillor Jacky Smith, cabinet member for communities, health, wellbeing and skills at South Kesteven District Council, said: “With this week being National Apprenticeship Week, it’s perfect timing for the Engineered in Grantham brochure to launch. There are so many ways of getting into engineering and apprenticeships are a great alternative to the more traditional routes. As a retired engineer myself, I can’t advocate the career enough.”
Steve Bowyer, chief executive of InvestSK, the council-owned company responsible for leading the local skills agenda, said: “South Kesteven has a rich engineering and manufacturing history and Grantham in particular has a fantastic range of companies delivering world-class products and services.
“While the engineering sector is a key growth industry for the UK, and is inherently important to Grantham too, at a global level it’s facing a deep rooted skills shortage and competition for talent is high. So now’s the perfect time to start a career in engineering and I’d urge anyone to explore the many great apprenticeships or work experience opportunities with the fantastic companies featured in the brochure.”
Chairman and founder of the Engineered in Grantham group and managing director of Bernard Holmes Precision Ltd, Kay Pryszlak, said: “The skills gap in engineering has come to a head and this is why I set up this group, to collaborate with local businesses to reach a wider audience. Our aim is to bridge the gap between people considering a career in engineering, employers and the education providers.
“Engineering is a highly rewarding career choice and there are many routes to get into the profession – not everyone needs to go to university. I hope the brochure helps to inspire the next generation of engineers and I would encourage anyone who would like to find out more to get in touch.”
